The elusive active nucleus of NGC 4945 ?
We present new HST NICMOS observations of NGC 4945, a starburst galaxy hosting a highly obscured active nucleus that is one of the brightest extragalactic sources at 100 keV. The HST data are complemented with ground based [Fe ii] line and mid-IR observations. A 100pc-scale starburst ring is detected in Paα, while H2 traces the walls of a super bubble opened by supernova-driven winds. The conic...
متن کاملGas Dynamics of NGC 4472
We present preliminary results from a 100 ks XMM-Newton observation of the hot gas in the nearby massive early-type galaxy NGC 4472. This galaxy is the central member of a group of galaxies that is believed to be falling into the Virgo cluster. We find several structures in the gas indicative of a previous epoch of nuclear activity and of a complex interaction with the ICM of the Virgo cluster....

Molecular gas in NGC 6946
We present imaging of molecular gas emission in the star-forming spiral galaxy NGC 6946. Our 12 CO(1-0) and 12 CO(3-2) images, made at 22 ′′ resolution with the IRAM 30-m and the Heinrich Hertz 10-m radio telescopes, are the most extensive observations of molecular gas in this galaxy and are among the most extensive observations of molecular gas in any spiral galaxy. The 12 CO(1-0) emission sho...
متن کاملThe Declined Activity in the Nucleus of NGC 1316
NGC 1316 (Fornax A) is a radio galaxy with prototypical double lobes, where the magnetic field intensity is accurately measured via the inverse-Compton technique. The radio-emitting electrons in the lobes are inferred to have a synchrotron life time of ∼ 0.1 Gyr. Considering the lobe energetics, we estimate the past nuclear X-ray luminosity of NGC 1316 to be at least ∼ 4 × 10 W (4 × 10 erg s). ...
